Recession Special: Carbonite Data Backup 15-Day Trial Offer

Carbonite, the data backup client offering data protection with a 15 Petabyte storage capacity, provides internet and computer users an invaluable service, at a recession-busting rate of only pennies a day. They offer a 15-day free trial to introduce you to their services.

Data loss can add great insult to the injury of suffering financial pressures in a deleterious economic climate. It’s a small price to pay to have your data securely backed up — as opposed to the incalculable cost of losing personal or business data which can often be irreplaceable.

The truth is, anyone with a PC can benefit from Carbonite’s data backup system.Though it’s especially true for businesses, data loss prevention affects 43% of PC users, and can be just as devastating. Backing up your personal or business files and database is of paramount importance. These days, all it takes is one strong worm or virus and your data could be forever lost.

How it Works

Once Carbonite data backup is set up on your computer, it requires little ongoing work on behalf of the user. It reads and stores your data as long as you’re online, and users can also log on to the Carbonite site and access their files.

The Carbonite client is then always looking for new data on your PC. When you add or modify files, Carbonite starts backing them up immediately. It backs up about 2GB per day over broadband. Carbonite’s backup solution works by placing colored dots on your files and folders. Different colors represent different “file states”: 1) If the file has been backed up, 2) will be backed up or 3) will not be backed up.

Indian Food

Indian food is distinct in its flavor, texture and spice content. While the use of spices is common to all Indian food, regions are sometimes distinguished by vegetable variety use and various influences. While various regions can be acknowledged there is also a great variety among local styles. For guests staying in hotels in Mumbai, dinning out and experiencing the splendor of Indian cuisine is a top priority. Tourist should keep in mind that some of the dishes can be extremely spicy and they should inquire before trying, or at least have a large supply of water handy, and be prepared for the potential consequences on their digestive system.

Some of the regional variations include a strong Asian influence in the North and West. This is evident in the cuisines of Kashmiri and Mughlai. This has flowed into many of the regional kitchens and is a strong factor in the overall flavor. Another variety is seen in the use of fish and coconuts in most of the coastal regions. A distinguishing factor for the cuisines typical to Rajasthan and Gujarat is the use of preserves to substitute for the lack of fresh vegetables. Tamil food is recognized for its sourness, brought on by the large use of tamarind. The cuisine of Andhra is known for its use of spices, though this is not the major ingredient as is sometimes assumed.

The rapid evolution in culinary practices occurring in India is due to extreme urbanization and has resulted in the home cooked foods becoming much simpler and requiring less time and preparation. Some of the older and more traditional recipes are falling by the way side. This has led to a variety of cookbooks being written for the singular purpose of preserving the culinary cultural heritage. Another interesting factor is the continued blending of various traditions and styles. It is common for Tandoori fish, Jain pizzas and mutton dosas to be found in restaurants in most Indian cities.

Miro in Mallorca

When it comes to luxury, Mallorca hotels hold nothing back. Set in some of the most glorious, idyllic Spanish landscape, with the Mediterranean Sea literally a whisper away, the city seems designed for tourists. And travelers will find a sumptuous feast of pleasures awaiting them in this upbeat and relaxing haven. Mallorca is host to amazing foods, gorgeous scenery, and a vibrant and hospitable night life. It also has an amazing history, and has been home to artists and intellectuals for centuries.

One of Mallorca’s most famous residents was Joan Miro. This surrealist painter had ancestral ties here, and his love of the place was so strong he lived his last years here, after a career as a very successful visual artist.

Joan Miro found his way into the surrealists through the introductions of its founder, Andre Breton, who admired Miro immensely (at least at first, Breton never admired anyone for very long). Surrealism grew directly from Dada’s roots (or ashes). Dadaism was a movement that began during and immediately following the first world war. In visual art, it is characterized by jarring and incomprehensible images surrounded by a barrage of words. The Dadaists felt that World War One meant that if the carnage of the war was indeed the peak of reason and Western thought, then it was better to refuse reason, and stop making sense. A love of nonsense, with a very sharp political edge, is one of the building blocks of Dadaist thought. Dadaists also hated everything, including Dadaism, which lead to its demise.

The Surrealists came immediately on the heels of the Dadaists, and inherited their love of nonsense, and took it to the unconscious. Inspired by Freudian psychoanalysis, the Surrealists used unconscious associations in their images, jarring images forced together so that the viewer needs to make their own associations. This, coupled with the idea that the freeing of the unconscious would lead to the freeing of the human being, is a central idea of Surrealism. Miro was one of its most important practitioners. Mild-mannered in appearance, but radically bohemian in philosophy, he painted in his own school of Surrealism until his death in Mallorca in 1983. In his work, Miro combined his own dream worlds, and particularly drew upon bird imagery and female imagery, to form a style that is unquestionably Surrealist, and at the same time unapologetically Spanish.

Travel somewhere different in the US

2009 French Open Tennis Tournament

The eyes of the world will soon be shifting to Paris, and the Roland Garros Stadium, for the 2009 French Open. Running May 24th through June 7th, this year’s Open promises to deliver the same caliber of rigorous Grand Slam tennis of years past. The French Open is the second of the four Grand Slam events, widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious series of tournaments.

The slower ball and higher bounce associated with clay court tennis is but one challenge. Due to the five-set men’s singles matches, with no tiebreaker; many have called The French Openthe most physically demanding tournament in the world.

The red clay courts of Roland Garros Stadium have proven to be a hindrance to many of the world’s greats. Jimmy Connors, Martina Hingis, John McEnroe, Maria Sharapova, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer have all failed to bring home the French Open trophy, but there are some players who can work the nuances of the courts to their advantage. Much like a Chef specializing in a regional cuisine, playing on the courts of Roland Garros requires a more specific touch, and the number of players who feel at home here reads like a who’s who of champion’s.

In this year’s event Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova will give the French Open title another effort, while Novak Djokovic will attempt to add the second Grand Slam event to his Australian Open victory. Rafael Nadal, along with Serena Williams and Andrew Murray, are looking all looking very strong, and expected to shine.

Phoenix lawyer Dies of Rare Brain Disease

April 18, 2009, AZ Republic – A prominent Phoenix lawyer has died of an apparent case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is so rare it literally strikes one in a million. It was the first case recorded in Arizona this year; only two cases were confirmed in the state last year.

T. Michael Daggett, 63, who had worked at the Phoenix law firm Stinson Morrison Hecker for seven years, died April 11 at his home in Paradise Valley.

A conclusive diagnosis has yet to be made, said his wife, Robin. Brain tissue is being analyzed by experts at the Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center in Cleveland.

The state Department of Health Services said early indications are that the disease was “sporadic CJD,” one of several prion diseases that people sometimes confuse with variant CJD, commonly known as mad-cow disease.

Symptoms are similar, so the two diseases are confused because they both involve a buildup of a misshapen protein called a prion.

Sporadic CJD, however, is not caused by eating tainted meat.

Medical science does not know the cause of sporadic CJD. A small percentage is genetic, but Robin Daggett said there was no other case of the disease in his family.

Shoana Anderson, acting chief for the office of infectious-disease services at the DHS, would not discuss Daggett’s death because of privacy concerns.

However, she confirmed that an adult male had died of what was apparently sporadic CJD.

Anderson said the brain-tissue examination in Cleveland will likely confirm the diagnosis.

“This testing could indicate a change (in diagnosis), but it’s unlikely,” Anderson said.

“People will hear prion disease and automatically assume it was mad-cow disease, but we do not think it was mad-cow disease.” Sporadic CJD is not contagious, she said.

Dr. Jiri Safar, associate director of the surveillance center in Cleveland, also declined to speak specifically about Phoenix lawyer Daggett’s case. He said, however, that “prion disease is devastating; it looks like accelerated Alzheimer’s disease.”

The average survival time after symptoms first appear is six months, he said.

Daggett’s symptoms appeared in January when his head felt pressure, as though he had allergies. In mid-February, he began slurring his speech and felt as though his tongue were swollen. An emergency-room visit ruled out a stroke or brain tumor.

Neurologists at Barrow Neurological Institute performed MRIs, spinal taps and EEGs.

His motor functions were disappearing. He slipped into a light coma about March 27 and the diagnosis came in on March 30.

Michael Manning, managing partner of the Phoenix law firm where Daggett worked, said he will be missed.

“He was an accomplished lawyer, a fearsome litigator and was a very astute real-estate lawyer, ” Manning said.

Daggett, a respected Phoenix lawyer, and his wife met in 1992 at a spiritual retreat at which participants also did painting and sculpture.

Robin said her husband was helpful and kind to people, financially and emotionally, and he was generous with his time and knowledge, giving free advice but not formally calling it pro bono work.

“He was a fun-loving person to be around,” she said. “He had quite a sense of humor.”
