The Durries of India

There has been an increased demand for Indian woven durries recently. Those wishing to import them and those living in the country of India. Many decorate their homes or their offices and businesses such as the Bangalore restaurants and hotels with these low maintenance carpets. The durry is a woven cloth that can be used under mattresses or as floor coverings. They are very sturdy, and have no piles, so the care of them is made very simple. Both are made on looms, the floor durry on a grand scale loom called an adda.

The traditional techniques of weaving the durries can be seen in the villages of Punjab, Rajasthan and Harayana. Some girls are taught how to weave durries at a very young age as part of the cultural tradition of preparing their wedding trousseau. However, some of the villages, such as Navalgund, never allow the girls to learn this craft, as they might take what they know, and employ themselves, outside of their future husband’s household.

Durries differ from the traditional Indian rugs in their design. While most think of flowers and paisleys when thinking of the Indian carpets, the durries are often created with geometric designs or bright strips of various colors. Birds and animals are also used to create the colorful motifs. The finer quality durries, crafted from silk and cotton can be found in Salem, while others such as those made with jute fiber are found in West Bengal. As stated earlier, these mats are lighter and more easily cared for than the thicker rugs, and are preferred by many modern housewives of India for just this reason. They are less expensive, can be washed in the home, and can be easily replaced when they wear out. However, the durry is known for the strength of the weaves and many last, and continue to hold their beauty for up to twenty years.

Medical Tourism: A Different Approach to Vacationing

You need a surgical procedure. You also need a vacation. In both cases, money is tight. Usually this means that the surgery will take priority and you will sacrifice your stress level and need to take a break to have whatever is necessary done. Stress will accumulate as you realize that health care costs are going through the roof, and whatever peace of mind you need to help recuperate from your procedure will require an enormous amount of effort.

Many people are in this situation, but are finding that with a trip that combines an essential surgery with a vacation, with money to burn, is not only ideal, but possible! There are more and more countries opening up to foreigners where diagnostics and procedures are every bit as professional and cutting edge as those at home. Affordable knee surgery is now possible in places like Mexico, Costa Rica, and India. Shoulder surgery costs are up to 50% lower in these countries as well, with surgeons educated in the U.S. and Canada attending in the state-of-the-art hospitals that sit on some of the most beautiful sites in the world. Heart surgery in places such as Cabo San Lucas in Mexico allow patients to recover after their procedure and then enjoy an exquisite white sandy beach nearby.

The options are there. With a small amount of research, you can find a medical tourism agency that will help you locate exactly what you need, expedite your medical records, X-rays, and any other information necessary, and book your reservations.

Opportunities for Growth

For those interested in investment opportunities, consider the island of Mauritius. Having long been known for the production and assembly of inexpensive garments, industry is now being tooled up to capture the profits from a modern and more vertically integrated manufacturing process.

The Africa Growth and Opportunity Act have opened up the opportunity for high profitability for Mauritian manufactured products. Most important is garment production which will enjoy an advantageous status with regard to the export of products to the USA. Until the year 2015, Mauritius will be able to export products to the USA without being restricted by quotas nor will the products be subject to duty in the USA. All of this helps to place the Mauritian products in a very competitive pricing position. These advantages are periodically bestowed to countries new to the export market. The push for vertical integration is motivated by the need to have control of the supply of raw goods. This control will allow Mauritius manufacturers to lessen their dependence on importing raw materials and hence paying the middle man. There are many opportunities for those who specialize in spinning mills, for the production of cotton and organic cotton fabrics. At the moment, the majority of products manufactured are t- shirts, men’s’ shirts, slacks, and cotton pullovers. In order to reap the benefit of the AGOA, now is the time to set up manufacturing for many types of products. For example, Mauritius is capable of producing production accessories such as zippers, buttons, thread, beads & sequins. In addition it’s the goal of others to set up shop in order to produce more fashion minded products like accessories; belts, purses and footwear, some of which are brand name items.

Mauritius is poised to become a major player in the fashion & design business and as such has goals to create educational programs for international & local students. The new schools would have a curriculum similar to the Fashion Institute of Technology, in New York City. To promote fashion innovation and product development in the future, international trade fairs will be held on the island. The ripple effect will benefit every aspect of the economy. Increased tourism, whether pleasure or work related, will require service industries to make plans for increased presence as well. One Mauritius luxury hotel chain plans to expand their services with the primary objective of placing Mauritius on the global map as a centre for fashion and design in this part of the world.

Sumatran Orangutan Open Sanctuary

The Perth Zoo, in Perth, Australia just opened the Orangutan Sanctuary in February of this year, 2009. The Sanctuary is not however in Australia, not close to the luxury Perth hotels, but actually in Indonesia at the Bukit Tigapuluh National Park. The Orangutan, one of the first new residents, was born in Australia at the Zoo. And the zoo has funded the entire project there in Indonesia. The park has been home to more than one hundred Orangutans that were abandoned pets or orphaned in the wild. Efforts to re-populate the species involved just setting them back out into the wild. These are an endangered species in the region and not all of those released, especially the turned away pets, were able to adapt to living on their own. They required the care of animal specialists.

The mission of the Perth Zoo and the Sanctuary is to ensure that the animals are in their natural habitat, but that they receive the care that is necessary for the survival of each animal and that of the entire species. The animals will not be treated as pets, but will be re-introduced to their own animal societies in hopes that their offspring will thrive. There will be a full time staff at all times, and construction is taking place to create trails throughout the park in order for staff to keep track of the animals in their care. The first two animals, a male and a female, from Perth were released into the sanctuary this past January. The Perth Zoo is the world leader in their capabilities with these animals, and have been the most successful at breeding them. They are very knowledgeable in the ways of training the animals to live in the wild, to fend for themselves. Staff from the Zoo will remain involved in the sanctuary, making trips twice a year to Indonesia to assess the progress of the animals and of the park.
