Something that may have at one time been considered to be a strictly male interest, or even obsession, is now the domain of both genders. Combating Terrorist Financing

It’s important for all board of directors of any Global company to understand and handle the risk of financial fraud, money laundering, fraud, and market abuse due to the terrorists attacks on the US on 9/11. Terrorists groups and their operations receive funds through a variety of fronts, for example: by using economic or financial and commercial system as an agent to disguise the funding origins and purpose.

The 1999 International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism is the primary mechanism for combating terrorist financing. The UN requires signatory member states to pass laws that allow the confiscation and seizure of any terrorist assets and laws that will criminalize any act that provides and collects funds with the intentions of being used to implement and carry out a terrorist attack.

After the 9/11 attacks, sanctions were expanded on the UNSCR 1373 to include individuals, organizations and the countries they reside. Institutions in the regulated financial sector are now required to screen all their clients and customers against UN blacklists of said individuals and organizations suspected with connections to terrorists. Imprisonment of officers and directors are the penalties if these individuals and organizations commit a criminal offense by providing any kind of financial assistance to the blacklisted parties.

In 2000, the UK implemented their own Terrorism Act and in 2006 announced a wider comprehensive counter-terrorism strategies: By engaging in the battle ideas of tackling disadvantage,deterring promoters of terrorism, by better intelligence to disrupt their activities, which includes the countering of terrorist finance, strengthen the security of the borders and defend key utilities, and continually test their countries preparedness by building up incident response capabilities. The challenge to combat terrorist financing is multi-faceted, requiring an array of responses across personal life and business responsibility.

Bangkok’s Art Center

Bangkok is an eclectic and exciting city, and visiting here for any reason carries its share of thrills.  For business travelers, it’s a bustle of activity, with plenty of opportunities to observe the local culture, and to feel part of the scene.  It’s enormously diverse, and there’s always something to do, day or night, and our Bangkok business hotels offer rest and hospitality for all the times in between.  The pace of Bangkok is relaxed and easy, and invites visitors to do the same.  This can be an extremely welcome change of pace for those used to working with single-minded determination, as it allows for the chance to slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery.

Hottubs and How I Met Your Mother

There is a magnificent spirit in the novel that speaks to those who have decided to allow pleasure into their world, and when you have your own personal spa, you’ve made a certain choice.  It may well be that immortality won’t come to your door, but there is certainly something to the idea that hot tubs can increase longetivity.  Water is part of a healthy lifestyle, and not just drinking.  Being submerged creates a feeling of well-being, that hearkens back to life in the womb, and you might not have the same adventures as the characters in Tom Robbins’ novel, but you will definitely have adventures.  The search for the good life includes healthy habits that help you to live longer, and one of the healthiest habits of all is to take the time to enjoy the moments that sometimes pass, and sometimes rise up to meet you.

Even Great Detectives Love to Grill

Visiting Sydney

Blaire wanted to see a wombat (who doesn’t, really, just say the word wombat) and when in Sydney one must, at least that is what they told us at the Hotel Sydney Australia. We were advised we would need to take a ferry out to a certain zoo, and that we needed to see the unusual animals of this beautiful continent called Australia. It turns out they were talking about the well known and respected Taronga Zoo. We decided to get an early lunch before our departure, so we ran into a nice looking Irish pub and had fish and chip and a nice draft or two. Australian Rules football was on the video screen and tried to figure out what was going on. A fellow near us with a big shite beard like Santa Clause and a belly to match tried to explain some of the finer points of the game (like, who was playing whom and other complicated matters) but I had a real hard time understanding him and his accent. To me it sounded like he was talking from the bottom of a well, plus the pub, while friendly and tidy, was getting rowdy in the wake of the game, as folks here really got into watching the sport. It reminded me a bit of back home in Cleveland and Sundays watch the other football (well, to be fair, there are others) and the excited reaction of fans everywhere to their teams and the opponents. But we needed to get going as wombats were calling and we had read on line that we could see owls and the famous platypus. So famous are the platypus that one expects the sports teams to named after them, but it is not known if there are any teams so named.

Singapore Exhibits at Science Centre

Among the many educational offerings of the Science Centre Singapore are also those that serve as both inspirational aspects, greater interest investments and interactive exploratory offerings. These ingredients combine to provide one of the greatest science and technology experiences in Southeast Asia. In addition to the great observatory, part of the Centre’s offerings include a diverse collection of exhibits for every age group and interest level. Tourists staying in one of the Singapore four star hotels often visit the Science Centre and are surprised by the extent of its educational as well as fun and interactive elements.

Among some of the exhibits presented at the Centre are the Space Science, The Atrium and The Mind’s Eye. It is important to stress that these are just a few of the many exhibits offered, and the exhibits themselves do not constitute all the Centre has to offer. The Space Science exhibit is located on the Omni-Planetarium. This amazing spectacle of sight and mind takes the viewer/participant on an exciting journey through space. This interactive program describes and engages the viewer on many aspects of the solar system in which we exist, as well as various other aspects found in the universe.

The Atrium is the centralized exhibit area in the Centre. It comprises the largest exhibit space and spans two levels. It provides and orientation to the multiple exhibit offerings at the Centre and also features a periodic multi-media presentation that literally brings this area to life and captivates viewers as they prepare for their journey of discovery and intrigue. It also features the Tesla Coil Demonstration which is a giant explosion of high voltage electricity. The Mind’s Eye is an amazing collection of mind boggling and visual disorienting pictures and interactive optical illusions . It is located near the main entrance lobby and is usually one of the guest’s first encounters, which certainly sets the stage for a mind altering experience.

Tropicália in Barcelona

Spain is, without question, one of the most exciting countries in Europe. It’s no accident that most people who pass through here, even on a whim, will find their way back. It has a certain charm, and it sometimes seems as though this charm is condensed in Barcelona. One of Spain’s largest cities, and one of the financial and creative centers in the world, Barcelona is simply exquisite. When you think of luxury, Barcelona hotels will automatically come to mind after you’ve spent some time here. One of their recent exhibitions, Tropicália & Post-tropicalismo in Brasil (1967-1967)  was a stellar example of their exciting programming. This exhibition examined the tropicália movement in Brasil on the cultural and political life there. It got its name from a work by Hélio Oiticica, who was developing an artistic philosophy that expounded on the idea of antropófago, or cultural cannibalism. Two of its most famous exponents are Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil. Their music provided a revolutionary groundwork for the generations after them, invoking a mix of Latin, African, and pop Western styles, to make a unique art form that also contains both subtle and overt cultural critiques.
