For many people who grew up on Disney, there is really not better story out there than that of Beauty and the Beast. Because of this, when it was announced that they had turned it into a Broadway musical, there was much rejoicing. Unfortunately for many people, not everyone was able to make it to a showing when it was on Broadway. This may have been for money, or of other reasons, but that doesn’t mean that all of these people still can’t go see it. If you are in Denver or the surrounding area, make sure you get down to Phamaly stage in Denver and check out their production of the live action musical. This reproduction includes all of the songs from the original as well as a couple of new ones. It will be playing on weekends from July 15th through August 15th, so there is still a little bit of time.

Portland Misses Velveteria

For those who have long admired Portland’s vibrant and distinctive cultural scene, there’s definitely a space missing these days. It was the only city in the world to boast an entire gallery devoted solely to the cause of promoting works of art on velvet. Velveteria did indeed close its doors in February of 2010. The owners who started it, Caren Anderson and Karl Baldwin, decided to move back to their home by the beach in Southern California. Their own story, in fact, rivals the story of Velveteria, because it was always a love story.

For the couple, who have been seen picking up traces of their work and finding audiences in sunnier locations, the love story has always been central, even though it was partially based on a strange love for velvet paintings. The Garden is huge, and has a beautiful collection of plants, a refreshing rose garden, meandering paths over gentle hills and shaded glades; towered by the Leu House, built in 1888, which now serves as a decorative arts museum known as the Garden House.

The scenic walkways will take you through this southern styled garden, including America’s largest Carmellia collection, 3-acres of idea gardens for weekend projects, 2-acre Tropical Stream Garden, an Herb garden, a Palm, Bamboo and Cycad gardens, and a Butterfly Garden, which in the springtime is teaming with these six-legged graceful, colorful aviators known as symbols of hope and rebirth. All areas have sculptures nestled about, along with benches and water fountains.

The Garden House is a place for meetings and receptions, which provides a nice array of services to the public. Three rooms: the Camellia Room, the Rose Room, and the Orchid Room serve as a place for educational forums, conferences, banquets and seminars. The Botanical Library servicing students, homeowners and many green industry professionals, and the Garden Gift Shop is accessible to the public without entry into the Gardens.

This Garden is located not far from the airport and any of the four star hotels in Orlando , so before you leave this wonderful city and head back home; back to work, do yourself a favor, stop in and take a stroll through paradise.
