Spiderman and Jedi’s Prevent Robbery

A man dressed as Spiderman and a couple of men dressed as jedi knights prevented a robbery from happening. Spiderman seems to think that most people thought it was just a little joke, a play until the police finally arrived. Here is Spiderman’s statement.

Obama signed into action a Student Loan Reformation bill that will help students get student loans, keep these loans out of traditional banks, and will help students pay off loans as they can. Combating Terrorist Financing

It’s important for all board of directors of any Global company to understand and handle the risk of financial fraud, money laundering, fraud, and market abuse due to the terrorists attacks on the US on 9/11. Terrorists groups and their operations receive funds through a variety of fronts, for example: by using economic or financial and commercial system as an agent to disguise the funding origins and purpose.

The 1999 International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism is the primary mechanism for combating terrorist financing. The UN requires signatory member states to pass laws that allow the confiscation and seizure of any terrorist assets and laws that will criminalize any act that provides and collects funds with the intentions of being used to implement and carry out a terrorist attack.

After the 9/11 attacks, sanctions were expanded on the UNSCR 1373 to include individuals, organizations and the countries they reside. Institutions in the regulated financial sector are now required to screen all their clients and customers against UN blacklists of said individuals and organizations suspected with connections to terrorists. Imprisonment of officers and directors are the penalties if these individuals and organizations commit a criminal offense by providing any kind of financial assistance to the blacklisted parties.

In 2000, the UK implemented their own Terrorism Act and in 2006 announced a wider comprehensive counter-terrorism strategies: By engaging in the battle ideas of tackling disadvantage,deterring promoters of terrorism, by better intelligence to disrupt their activities, which includes the countering of terrorist finance, strengthen the security of the borders and defend key utilities, and continually test their countries preparedness by building up incident response capabilities. The challenge to combat terrorist financing is multi-faceted, requiring an array of responses across personal life and business responsibility.

Phoenix lawyer Dies of Rare Brain Disease

April 18, 2009, AZ Republic – A prominent Phoenix lawyer has died of an apparent case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is so rare it literally strikes one in a million. It was the first case recorded in Arizona this year; only two cases were confirmed in the state last year.

T. Michael Daggett, 63, who had worked at the Phoenix law firm Stinson Morrison Hecker for seven years, died April 11 at his home in Paradise Valley.

A conclusive diagnosis has yet to be made, said his wife, Robin. Brain tissue is being analyzed by experts at the Prion Disease Pathology Surveillance Center in Cleveland.

The state Department of Health Services said early indications are that the disease was “sporadic CJD,” one of several prion diseases that people sometimes confuse with variant CJD, commonly known as mad-cow disease.

Symptoms are similar, so the two diseases are confused because they both involve a buildup of a misshapen protein called a prion.

Sporadic CJD, however, is not caused by eating tainted meat.

Medical science does not know the cause of sporadic CJD. A small percentage is genetic, but Robin Daggett said there was no other case of the disease in his family.

Shoana Anderson, acting chief for the office of infectious-disease services at the DHS, would not discuss Daggett’s death because of privacy concerns.

However, she confirmed that an adult male had died of what was apparently sporadic CJD.

Anderson said the brain-tissue examination in Cleveland will likely confirm the diagnosis.

“This testing could indicate a change (in diagnosis), but it’s unlikely,” Anderson said.

“People will hear prion disease and automatically assume it was mad-cow disease, but we do not think it was mad-cow disease.” Sporadic CJD is not contagious, she said.

Dr. Jiri Safar, associate director of the surveillance center in Cleveland, also declined to speak specifically about Phoenix lawyer Daggett’s case. He said, however, that “prion disease is devastating; it looks like accelerated Alzheimer’s disease.”

The average survival time after symptoms first appear is six months, he said.

Daggett’s symptoms appeared in January when his head felt pressure, as though he had allergies. In mid-February, he began slurring his speech and felt as though his tongue were swollen. An emergency-room visit ruled out a stroke or brain tumor.

Neurologists at Barrow Neurological Institute performed MRIs, spinal taps and EEGs.

His motor functions were disappearing. He slipped into a light coma about March 27 and the diagnosis came in on March 30.

Michael Manning, managing partner of the Phoenix law firm where Daggett worked, said he will be missed.

“He was an accomplished lawyer, a fearsome litigator and was a very astute real-estate lawyer, ” Manning said.

Daggett, a respected Phoenix lawyer, and his wife met in 1992 at a spiritual retreat at which participants also did painting and sculpture.

Robin said her husband was helpful and kind to people, financially and emotionally, and he was generous with his time and knowledge, giving free advice but not formally calling it pro bono work.

“He was a fun-loving person to be around,” she said. “He had quite a sense of humor.”

Oprah Winfrey Defends South African School

Famous American talk show host, actress and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey has been put into the position of defended her South African girls school in Johannesburg this week. Winfrey stated that mistakes have been made, but that the school remains extremely successful of providing the young women of this African city opportunities that were not available to them before, and perhaps would not have been for a very long time. The school, the Leadership Academy for Girls, opened two years ago in 2007. The school was intended to nurture students from deprived and depressed backgrounds and villages, and to provide them with the education necessary to be able to pursue university study and careers in the business world, the hotels Johannesburg is building, as well as those in the fields of medicine and technology. The forty million dollar institution, for which Winfrey paid for entirely, is equipped with science and computer labs, a theater and a library. As it stands the school began with just two grades, 7th and 8th, and just about 150 students, and is projected to grow into a combined middle school and high school, offering education to over 450 students, and serving those from 7th grade through to graduation from 12th grade. This will hopefully occur by the year 2011.

However, two scandals have brought the school, the teachers and the administrators and even Winfrey herself into question and under fire. One of the matrons of the dorms is currently on trial for allegedly committing acts of sexual misconduct and physical abuse. And during March of this year seven students were removed from the school, three of them suspended and the other four permanently expelled. Reports at the time stated that these girls were accused of forcing sexual contact upon their unwilling classmates. When the accused testified, they admitted to being conscious of the fact that what they had been doing was wrong, but they went ahead with it regardless. Even given the current situation, Winfrey states that many of the students are thriving and this was her own dream and also a promise she had made to Nelson Mandela, that the female children would receive the education and the opportunities that they so deserve.

Always Google Your Applicant’s Names

If you’re involved in the hiring process the chances are you will do an online search using the applicants names before deciding whether you want to proceed. I know I do this. The chance exists that you might pull up some dirt on them or that you will gain some additional insight into them. I have come up with some strange stuff!!
