The Importance of Usabiity Tests

Decades ago manufacturers in many industries realized that they needed to test their products not just inspect them. Putting a toy or gadget into the hands of a potential customer would allow company researchers to see how it would actually be used and record the reactions of the customers both before and after their product experience. These types of Usability Tests have been adapted to the modern age in the form of website and software testing.

Software and website developers learned early on that extensive testing is the key to a successful product launch. The engineers themselves were much too invested in the software to be able to understand how the average user will interact with it. Likewise, the web developer sees a website through different eyes than the regular consumer.

Usability tests will make sure not only that software and sites function as designed, but that the user will be able to understand, navigate, and use the product easily and in a manner that is stress-free and enjoyable. If a site or program is too complicated or frustrating, they are less likely to become return visitors or users. A positive or even great user experience is what gets customers to not only return, but to recommend the application or page to their friends and family.

The benefits of being an open source operating system is that there are more people to make apps for you. In this case it is Kindle making an app for Android. Both companies are expecting this to do very well. The app will let you buy and download books from the Kindle library, read either horizontal or vertical and will use Whispersync to make sure all Kindle enabled devices such as the actual Kindles, and the program on the computer know what page you are on, bookmarks, notes and highlights. Kindle’s hope, beyond just making a ton of new book sales is that it will attract people who have not yet committed to buying a Kindle and may allow them to see the reasons they may want one.

Sprint No Longer Carying Google Phone

Sprint has said that they will no longer carry the Google Phone Nexus One. While this may seem like a great loss, it is mostly because Sprint has become so hyped up about the upcoming Evo which is also a Google Phone, that they no longer want to carry the already outdated Nexus One. This is both a good and a bad day for Google. While this will ruin their chances of the type of phone sales they were hoping to make in the US, it might not completely dash them for it shows that Sprint is still willing to wheel and deal with them.

IE’s Browser Market Shares Dropping

For a few tech savvy people this might seem like it is the norm, but for the majority of people it probably comes as a surprise to know that IE’s share of the browser market has been decreasing, and is still falling. It isn’t just due to new browsers being available however, it is also due to the fact that IE has been having a lot of security errors lately. While it may not seem too bad to some people to know that they are down to over 60% of people using it, this is quite a drop from 95% back in the early 2000′s.

Hewlet Packer has agreed to buy smart phone maker Palm. The boards are already in agreement, it is now just up to the stock holders and the regulators. Honestly, HP will be paying a little extra for the company, but they will get a great investment.

Adobe Halts Flash-to-Iphone App

Adobe has been working on a way to get around the fact that Apple decided they weren’t going to allow flash on the Iphone. However, after proving that it could be done, and that there would be no harmful effects to the phone, Adobe stopped work on the project and decided to turn their sights in another direction, specifically the direction of the Droid which has so far not had problems with flash. The reason for this, is Apple’s new Iphone developer agreement, and what it means for the flash-to-iphone app.

Leaked Specks for HP Slate give IPad the Advantage

There has been a lot of hype about the IPad since it came out. While it looks cool, Microsoft has been boasting that it too had a similar product coming out soon. Unfortunately for them, specks on their new HP Slate have been leaked recently, and while some parts of it are better, overall it is looking like the IPad may actually be the better choice for these two first generation products.

It is impressive what you can do with a bunch of people you’ve only ever met online. I have friends who we only really get along when we are online, and that is ok. With a lot of my other friends and business associates, it has generally been better to connect at a deeper level whether that means we need some time apart to talk to each other over the long distances of the internet, or if that means that one of us needs to fly or drive in and meet face to face. Here is a great article on how to do the second part, taking an online community and connecting in person for the first time.
