Malaysia’s melting pot, Kuala Lumpur, is the fastest growing metropolis in the region. The Klang Valley’s population now exceeds seven million and the city’s growing popularity with tourists adds to that total every year. While it is the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur is a truly global in its scope. Various ethnicities and religions coexist peacefully in this cultural and economic center. The city also seemlessly blends the traditional with modern and western influences with eastern heritage.
The city’s melting pot atmosphere is exemplified in the wide range of religious sites it houses. Temples, mosques, and churches of a multitude of faiths can be found in Kuala Lumpur. Notable mosques include the Masjid Jamek, the Federal Territory Mosque, and the Masjid Negara. Temples such as Thean Hou Temple and the Sri Mahamariamman Temple host special festivals and cultural celebrations throughout the year. One of the most famous festivals in Kuala Lumpur is the annual Thaipusam procession from Sri Mahamariamman Temple to the Batu Caves outside the city.
Other historic sites of interest in Kuala Lumpur include House of Parliment, the Tugu Negara, and the Istana Budaya. The Istana Negara is the offical resident of the King of Malaysia while the Dataran Merdeka, or Independence Square, is where the country declared its independence in 1957 from British rule. Museums to explore include the National Museum, the Islamic Museum, and the National Gallery of Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur is also home to many modern structures and conveniences. Skyscrapers define the urban skyline, with the Petronas Twin Towers holding the distinction of the world’s tallest twin buildings (formerly the tallest building in the world). Tourists will also find over sixty modern shopping malls, numerous fine dining restaurants, and 5 star hotels in Kuala Lumpur as well as a thriving nightlife of clubs, lounges, and bars.
With balmy weather all year, tourists may want to check out some of the beach and mountain areas of Kuala Lumpur and the many outdoor activities available. There are also a number of parks offering recreational activities and opportunities to relax and the Zoo Negara provides a sanctuary for native animals.
