Hollywood Invades New York for the Tony Awards

While it’s true that New York is a city that never sleeps, you will definitely want to catch up on a few zees if you intend to visit it. And while most people who do make a trip to New York plan to see at least one Broadway play, or a performance of one of the other great theatre companies that are found throughout the city, the latest buzz is all about recognizing and honoring the best of New York as well as national regional theatre and the people who practice this art. But for those who are in the audience for one or more of these great productions, the honor and recognition is just part of the experience.

Interestingly there are a large number of actors who are well known for their work in television and film on the nominee list for the Tony Awards. Among them are Jude Law, how received critical approval and major audience appreciation for his role as Hamlet in the iconic Shakespearean play. Another Hollywood heavy weigh, Denzel Washington is up for an award for best actor in a play for his role in the August Wilson drama Fences. Laura Linney was nominated for best actress in a play for her starring role in Donald Margulies Time Stands Still. Linda Lavin is another major name who is nominated in the best actress category.

The list goes on for film and television favorites who are nominated for Tony Awards this year. The musical theatre categories include Kelsey Grammer and Sean Hayes who are both nominated for best actor in a musical. Grammer is in the revival production of La Cage aux Folles and Hayes is in the revival of Promises Promises. Catherine Zeta-Jones is nominated for her lead role in A Little Night Music and her cast member Angela Lansbury is up for one as well. With so many film and television stars in the line up, it fill almost more like the Academy or Emmy Awards and one has to wonder if Hollywood credits are becoming the new requirement for Broadway recognition. Of course the fans and guests in some of the best New York hotel s are just interested in seeing the great performances. That is after all, what it’s all about.
